Can innovation address the challenges care homes, nursing homes and mental health hospitals face in caring for our ageing population?
Throughout 2017, Oxehealth had the opportunity to attend a number of mental health and care home conferences including Design in Mental Health, Mental Health Today Wales, 2017 Care Homes Conference Salford and the Annual Research & Innovation Event, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust.
What was most evident from our visits, is that the landscape of mental health care provision continues to change rapidly. The distinction between services is becoming less clear and services are required to be ever more integrated to cope with caring for an increasingly ageing population, with care and nursing homes coming under increasing pressure.
It was thus not a surprise, and clearly evident, that both care and nursing homes have an increasing appetite for adopting new technologies, and that the growing number of innovations being developed is key to facing these challenges. The NHS's Five Year Forward View aims, devised by NHS England, suggests that services must harness these new technologies to support inpatients and residents, and has suggested implementation of technology initiatives take place in collaboration between hospitals and care home providers.
It is a challenge that Oxehealth's technology is seeking to address. With clinically led solutions and a growing number of partnerships with some of the UK's largest healthcare providers, the excitement and potential for our non-contact health and human activity monitoring was evident, with a number of organisations wishing to participate in our research collaboration programme.
Oxehealth also had the opportunity to present the results of our Broadmoor Hospital Trials at the Design in Mental Health conference, with Dr Kevin Murray, R&D Director, West London Mental Health NHS Trust, as well as some of the technologies core benefits:
· Alert staff to react quickly if no human signals are detected in an occupied room, through our Video Analytics solution.
· Track heart rate and breathing rate trends (for example post tranquilisation) using our Medical Analytics solution.
· Clinically led solutions, with the ability to adapt the technology to different environments depending on patient and staff needs.
