Oxford Health Shortlisted for The Future NHS Award in the Parliamentary Awards
It's brilliant to hear that the wonderful team at Oxford Health, who conducted a service improvement evaluation on their Vaughan Thomas ward using Oxehealth,have been chosen from hundreds of applicants to represent Oxfordshire in a prestigious competition to celebrate health and care heroes in England.
As a regional champion (South East) in the Future NHS category, Oxford Health will now vie with other regional winners from across England for a national award to be presented at a special ceremony in the Palace of Westminster in July.
The NHS Parliamentary Awards, supported by Fuji Film, recognises the massive contribution made by the individuals who work in and alongside the NHS.
Launched in March, it asked the region’s MPs to find and nominate those individuals or teams they thought have made the biggest improvements to health services in their constituencies across ten categories. Oxford Health, who have now implemented the modified observation protocol into “everyday use” in all patient bedrooms equipped with the Digital Care Assistant, were nominated by Mr John Howell OBE, Ms Anneliese Dodds, Mr Robert Courts, Mrs Victoria Prentis, Ms Layla Moran, Rt Hon Ed Vaizey.
From over 500 entries, senior experts have chosen seven outstanding nominations in each category, which exemplify the best of what the NHS and its partners do day in, day out.
All of the champions will now be invited to the national awards ceremony, which will be held on July 10th in the House of Commons.
The ceremony will be hosted by Dr Sara Kayat, NHS GP & TV Doctor best known for This Morning, Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls and GPs: Behind Closed Doors with performances from the NHS Choir.
Oxford Health - along with the regional champions - will now go forward to a final stage of judging by a panel including the leaders of Royal Colleges, the Unison trade union, and the Patients Association - collectively representing millions of health and care workers and patients.

About the project:Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust conducted a service improvement evaluation on Vaughan Thomas ward, a male acute inpatient ward. The evaluation assessed the use of Oxehealth’s Digital Care Assistant to improve patient rest and privacy at night without compromising safety.
The service improvement evaluation demonstrated that a modified protocol significantly improved patient and staff experience with no reduction in safety, whilst leaving the underlying Engagement and Observation policy at night largely unchanged.
Consequently, Oxford Health have now implemented the modified observation protocol into “everyday use” in all patient bedrooms equipped with the Digital Care Assistant.
Outcomes:Staff can confirm patient safety without disturbing or waking resting patients at night.The modified observation protocol is as safe as conventional methods.Patients feel they get better sleep and enjoy more privacy.Staff feel they disturb patients less whilst being confident that they are safe.Staff find the system easy to use and approximately twice as fast as conventional observation methods.

About OxehealthOxehealth was founded by the head of engineering at Oxford University, Professor Lionel Tarassenko in 2012. Since then, it has become a UK tech success story, with financial backing from IP Group Plc and Ora Capital, two major investment trusts committed to supporting UK science for the long-term.
Oxehealth’s Digital Care Assistant products are already used by nine mental health trusts (17% of all the mental health trusts in England), three care home chains in the UK and Sweden and two police forces.
Oxehealth’s software solutions act as an assistant for staff when they cannot be present in a room, or do not want to disturb an individual. They enable optical sensors to alert clinicians, carers and custodians to high-risk activity, take spot vital sign measurements and review activity reports. This helps staff to improve the care of the elderly and vulnerable by reducing injuries and enabling staff to spend more time on hands-on care.
A case study has been published about Oxehealth’s work at Manor Hospital, part of Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, where falls are a major risk. Staff report that the Digital Care Assistant has “become the sixth member of our team on the night shift.”
About Oxehealth’s vital signs measurement softwareOxehealth uses proprietary signal processing and computer vision to process normal digital video camera data to measure pulse rate and breathing rate and is intended for the non-invasive spot measurement of these vital signs.
