Welcome to Vital Signs, the Oxehealth blog, sharing news and views on how technology can assist in many mission critical patient-monitoring scenarios.
With continued pressure on healthcare providers and the government predicting more cuts or restraints in the pipeline for the NHS, Oxehealth's mission is to prove how technology is a great enabler in delivering more for less. With a predicted £20-£30 billion deficit applying pressure on the NHS, there is an enormous requirement for technology to enable clinical time to be focused on those who are ill, and less on those who are worried but well.
Oxehealth's patented Oxecam technology developed in the labs of world-leading scientist Professor Lionel Tarassenko and backed by IP Group plc enables a digital camera, tablet or phone to monitor the vital signs of an individual, without the need for any physical contact or expensive proprietary equipment.
It has the capability to transform technology partner propositions, with the next generation of non-contact patient monitoring being a great example.
The reliance on humans to read and make sense of the complexities of the data generated by monitoring over extended periods (as will often be the case with non-contact monitoring) presents a challenge. Relying on people to decide what is normal or abnormal is always going to present inconsistency and inaccuracy. Through machine learning algorithms the identification of deviations from person specific norms is possible, avoiding false alarms being created by generic thresholds, and providing early warnings where necessary. This is good for the efficiency of the health system and vital for increasing patient safety today.
Non-contact monitoring allows extended reading, combined with personalised early warnings, and applies to a wealth of sectors including in-car technology, elderly and prenatal. We aim to demonstrate how it is, and will be, vital to raising the bar in healthcare and wider sectors today.
